What do you think?

Convicted of accessing child pornography a few years back, very talented comedy writer and actor...Just starting to get new roles, I never thought I'd see it happen but it is...

I've got mixed feelings, as an admirer of his work it's a good thing, but is his crime forgivable?

Ignored with my first real thread here....I might skulk off....
Say you don't know who the fuck he is or say you aren't bothered, I don't care...

Sorry, hollowII, I've only just sat down at the keyboard!

It's a really difficult question. I've always liked Chris Langham as an actor and writer and was really shocked when he was had up for possessing child porn. Obviously as crimes go that one's really inexcusable - there's no justification for it. Does he deserve a second chance though, if he's truly sorry and will never do it again? I really don't know. Glad the decision isn't up to me!

Nah, don't skulk off! As far as I can recall, it was all very played down for some reason. Nowhere near the publicity or public reminders that Gary Glitter, Johnathon King and their ilk faced.

He's very in with the BBC though, is Langham.... so friends in high places?

Well as he is starring in the comedy drama Black Pond, and I mean 'starring' it looks like his rehab is complete.
It's pretty incredible if you ask me, quite unprecedented...Do you know what I mean? I mean part of me is glad for him...He's always been a bit of a troubled bloke.

Well at the time he took the bullet there were rumours of very high up labour party members being accused at the same time...That never came to anything while Langham, who was at the time making Labour look stupid in The Thick of It, got fed to the wolves.

Yes, it's pretty weird, really. I can understand your mixed feelings. Other stars who have been caught doing things they shouldn't have sunk without trace. For example, do you remember Frank Bough the TV presenter? He looked like everyone's favourite uncle - until it was discovered that he liked attending orgies dressed in women's clothes and snorting coke! He was never heard of again!

As I recall they gave Frank another chance and he got snapped entering a S&M dungeon...lol...

That ^^^ will be it then, Hollow. He scratched their backs, now they're scratching his. I guess they're hoping the public have short memories, if any at all.

While I'm all for the "ordinary criminals" getting another chance in life.... murderers, rapists and especially child abusers of all kinds should pay for it for the rest of their days (and hopefully beyond).

But a job with the BBC is a job for Life, so they'll have a go at bringing him back - like Barrymore before him. And if it doesn't work this time, they'll try again, and again, and again.

It all stinks really. cat

Frank...

Lol! I didn't know that!

He really didn't look like the sort of bloke to be into anything "unusual", did he, wearing those lovely jumpers on the breakfast TV sofa?!

Let's hope that Chris Langham doesn't mess up again - obviously, child porn is rather more serious than a liking for wearing women's frocks...

Absolutely. They just sometimes get a bit cleverer at hiding them.

Frank Bough always looked dodgy, always had a little glint in his eye that said "oooo, if only you knew what I get up to behind closed doors" He had a smugness about it.

Okay, I'm just saying things, sorry

I'd love to think that they could change their spots - but being realistic, I suspect you're quite right. You could never trust someone who indulged in such things once to never do it again.

LOL, yeah...If he's done it nowadays it would've been the making of him...

Yeah good point. He would've made a few quid on the chat show circuit, "reality" shows.

Yeah that's the other part of my mixed feelings.

It's the only part of mine. Mixed don't come into the equation for me.

Personally I am not sure that his crime is 'forgivable' as such - what he did was heinous - the question for me is whether or not we as a society say - ok he served his time lets move on. Or whether we say that the magnitude of the crime means he deserves to never be able to work in his field again and should live out the remainder of his life a pariah and penniless.

On a personal level I would like to see him and all others convicted of such a crime spending the remainder of their lives making a positive contribution to society on a level which has a positive impact on those for whom their actions have hurt the most. How that would happen on a practical level I do not know.

That his field of work means he is in the public eye makes little difference to me - it would make more of a difference I believe had he been a teacher or in another field which would bring him into unsupervised contact with children.

That's the crux of it for me too. Very wise words, as ever, thoreau.
