I am still having problems accessing USGS, so info is coming in from friends over on another forum who managed to get on there early enough as they have alerts set up.

So here we go...the original 8.9 has been downgraded (for the moment) to a 8.6. However, they were almost immediately hit by another 8.2

This is not an aftershock.

But I have seen a report of a 6.2 aftershocks. aftershocks normally drop a whole 1.0....this has dropped more.

Although the tsunami warning is still in place this was not a vertical drop in the plates, they already seem to think it was what's known as a strike-slip, which means it was a horizontal slip which massively reduces the chance of a tsunami.

Personally, I am still feeling very uncomfortable about what is happening there. These eq's have occured on a 'tripple junction'. In other words right at the crossing point of 3 plates. Imagine a Y and the eq's are occuring at the joining point.

Now, eq's of this magnitude reverberate all round the world (still waiting to get on LISS to show you graphs). Because of this I expect to see a bit of a knock on effect over the next few months.

From a geography perspective as I cannot get maps up to show you, these eq's have occured very close to Krakatoa and a couple of super volcanoes. Hmmmmm...I really hope I am wrong.

Please remember that Indonesia is sinking at an incredible rate. The latest figures I saw were 6ft since November. Goodness knows what this EQ will do now.

It's just been described on the news as the 13th most powerful quake of all time, despite the fact it hasn't caused that much damage.

That's because it was out to sea 500km away from land. It would have been a different story if it was landbased or had caused a tsunami

I read somewhere that a tsunami can happen however far from the nearest landmass an under-ocean quake occurs, as the shockwaves travel (at very high speeds) through the water below the surface and aren't diminished much by distance.

Tsunamis are only formed when there is a vertical drop between two plates...not by shockwaves from an EQ....got a linky..I call bshitty!

I read it in a book called The Hermes Fall...a 'fictional' read about a very possible 'factual' scenario concerning an asteroid or 'minor planet' ( not meteorite) landing in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.

Hermes exists...it passes very close to Earth on its strange orbit every 1.47 years. Its a lump of rock & iron the size of a big mountain & its travelling at something like 150,000 mph.

If, as often happens in the asteroid belt beyond Mars (where Hermes returns every 1.47 years on its elliptical orbit) Hermes is nudged by another asteriod, then its course could easily be slightly altered & it could hit us. The result would be quite frankly devastating.

Now that is something quite different, but the same idea as a land slip...basically the displacement of water.

There is evidence that this is how the Gulf of Mexico was partially formed when an adteroid slammed in there.
