| I wouldn't want to live anywhere near that or any other 'active' volcano. Don't understand why people build cities near them |

| As I understand it there are plus points to living near volcanoes. I believe it has an effect on soil fertility for example. That said, . Literally living under Damocles' sword. Can't be easy times for them. |

| Soil fertility is good yes...so best leave the 'danger zone' around an active volcano as agriculture land then eh.
I can get why in the past small communities grew around volcanoes, and also how those communities have grown over time into large cities. BUT...considering the very real danger to all those millions of people...wouldn't it make sense to just move the population wholesale to a new ready-built city elsewhere?
Cost of doing so would be huge for sure, but still...some things are more important than money right? |

| It is rather crazy isn't it. Pompeii was a very long time ago, by which I mean people have had a very long time to realise that putting conurbations on the slopes of volcanoes is rather fraught with danger. For sure there are island communities that have little choice. Mexico though is quite a big place. I'd need to look into it more as to why MC is where it is to this day. |

| If the soil is good, wouldn't that mean that the volcano had been inactive for a considerable amount of time? |

| I was wondering about this the other day. I think if a place has been safe for a while, people get complacent and feel okay to build there. There is this cottage near me called Waters Reach, which i guess is where the water once reached during a record flood - but all the houses lower down the hill and near the river would have been underwater and yet people still build there. I never could understand how people could sleep at night living in the shadow of a volcano, but like everything i guess you just get used to it. Same with living on a fault line. And yes, the soil is fertile, but think thats on account of all the lava/ash |

I don't know the answer to that tbh. Yes I guess fresh ash deposits etc would not be particularly good for the soil condition short term. It's just something I don't know about . My original reply was more speculation than anything. As domathy said, it is crazy where we choose to live sometimes. Locally, in the last 10 years there have been new housing estates built on traditional flood plains with very little protection employed. Any that has been obviously has a negative effect further downstream as well.... |

Not necessarily, The volcano can explode at any time....It all depends on what the good(bad) lord has planned. |
